Enforced time at home during the pandemic has spawned a new interest in embroidery and needlework crafts. From picking up the bare essentials of boro to recreating intricate botanicals, or picking up a hand loom to try weaving for the first time – using needles, threads and kits is on the rise.

Daruma is a brand of thread makers, started in 1901 with the mission to make highest quality sewing thread in the world. They developed fine quality polished cotton threads which worked as Japanese women were starting to wear more silk than cotton. Now with stockists all across the country and a reputation as the staple of needleworkers they have all types of thread for sewing, embroidery, crocheting and craft kits to make toys and woven items. Recognised for their logo with the Japanese Daruma doll, this brand is sure to become a favourite outside Japan because of the richness of their thread colours and quality.

HOW is now stocking:

  • Sashiko cloth patterns – called Yumefukin.
  • Sashiko threads in a wide colour range.
  • Yarn Trikotri kits to make Japanese (dog and animal) wool toys.
  • Neat Hand looms to weave fabric.

  • Colourful acetate embroidery hoops, magnifying glasses and thread organisers made in partnership with Sabae, the Japanese town which makes eyeglass frames.
